I guess the one I had in my previous garden just had too much competition from plants and trees around it to grow very big, it was about 4 ft high and 5 ft wide when I moved out and left it, and by then it was 11 years since I got it as a small plant. Here in my new garden it would have been the same with competition from other plants – had I planted any, but my two new acers will have to be container grown for the foreseeable future as the soil here has far too high pH. I am working on that, but it will take time!
By the way, I always come back and read answers to comments I leave on people’s blogs so I saw your reply to me on your own blog – I always tick the box Notify Me’ so I can keep track of who replies – and then I untick after they have replied, if they do.
Hope you have better summer weather than we do; rain, wind and only a measly 15 degrees C (59 F) today. Your roses are just spectacular for the month of June and I look forward to what next month has in store! You had asked me some questions about my Japanese Maples and I am finally catching up with blog comments, so please forgive the delay. It has been a very busy spring and summer. My Japanese Maples were planted about twenty years ago and the red one is Acer palmatum 'Garnet', as you had suspected. The green variety is Acer palmatum 'Viridis' Green Dissected Japanese Maple. Both trees are on the east side of the property but are exposed to southern exposure, and do fine. The salvia variety is 'May Night', and you would definitely love its bright purple blooms! As far as my furry visitor...bunny has been well behaved and cooperating so far, and hopefully will continue to do so! Thank you once again for visiting my blog Helene. I can always count on you for dropping by on Bloom Day and sincerely appreciate it. I also look forward to visiting you each month and enjoy our virtual communication. In addition I have lots of daylilies just starting to bloom too, so just as the roses take a short break between first and second flush, there’s plenty of other flowers to fill in the intermission.HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-41709113050120789742016-06-25T14:44:43.532+01:002016-06-25T14:44:43.532+01:00Abigail er en nydelig miniatyr som bare blir bedre...Abigail er en nydelig miniatyr som bare blir bedre og bedre for hvert år jeg har den. I use bark mulch fo...Hello Lyn, welcome to my blog!
I use bark mulch for a lot of reasons – 3 main reasons are to stop weeds, to preserve moisture and to improve the soil. As a bonus it will over time (long time!) slightly lower the pH too, but we are talking about maybe a 5-10 year period depending on which type of bark mulch, and I think you will find variations in how much it will affect the pH.

I can’t find a blog for you so I don’t know where you are from, but here in Britain bark mulch bought through garden centres etc. are always pine bark – and it has been composted first, you can’t just shred a tree at home and spread it on the ground, that would not be advisable. The bark should be left for 3 months before you use it in that case. The bark they sell here in Britain is a mix of bark from various pine trees and is ready to use as it is - and will not affect the nitrogen level in any significant way. In any case – it is actually not correct to say that mulch (like manure, grass clippings, mushroom compost etc) depletes the soil, because that’s not really what happens, the nitrogen is just temporarily tied up during the decomposition phase and then the nitrogen is released afterwards. This only applies when you incorporate mulch/organic matter into the soil - bark mulch is applied on top of the soil and interacts with only the very surface of the soil. It decomposes slowly at the surface without affecting available nitrogen levels down in the bed.

I hope that answers your question, I couldn’t do gardening without bark in the flowerbeds – I would end up spending all my time weeding and I’ve got better things to do :-)
Hope to see you back here, next post will be the last day of the month with a new video of the garden.HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-65081781495920559562016-06-23T21:43:49.727+01:002016-06-23T21:43:49.727+01:00Thanks Deb, I am slowly recovering back to my usua...Thanks Deb, I am slowly recovering back to my usual, my garden is very lush thanks to all the rain we have had – and still get – we have had so much rain that my garden is more than fully saturated with water, very unusual for June!
It would be well worth doing a search for the salvia locally or online, I can’t pass it without having a rub and a sniff, but when the sun is shining – which it hasn’t done much of lately – you don’t even have to rub the leaves the get the scent, you just have to sit nearby! My goodness what a weather we had. In a way it was spectacular, with almost an hour thunder and lightning moving around right over us. I was sitting on a stool in the doorway watching it, while the rain was hammering down – trying to keep an eye into the bathroom to see if I was going to be flooded or not. The toilet and the basin kept making gurgling noises for over an hour, in the end it went fine for me and my house and garden – not so just a few streets further up, 5 minutes’ walk from me. So hit and miss who will get flooded and who get spared!
I am slowly recovering and hopefully we will get some sun this weekend so I can enjoy my garden :-)HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-30754549534157301122016-06-23T21:43:08.462+01:002016-06-23T21:43:08.462+01:00Thanks Nadezda, I have had help in my garden for a...Thanks Nadezda, I have had help in my garden for a few hours nearly every week lately so that’s been good, I am getting better but things take time with me.
Hope you have better weather than we have!HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-36735719790967010032016-06-23T21:02:49.473+01:002016-06-23T21:02:49.473+01:00Thank you Ruth, I am slowly getting better. As I was saying to Kris above, the clematises I am growing in containers are specifically selected for container growing, I think you will find that the bigger, standard size ones will be happy for the first few years and then stop flowering – I have tried! But these 3 are rather short ones – and there are even shorter ones on the marked now so you should be able to find some suitable for a good size container.HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-85038073569845686882016-06-23T21:02:40.672+01:002016-06-23T21:02:40.672+01:00Thanks Chris, I think the main difference between ...Thanks Chris, I think the main difference between you and me has nothing to do with what we do and how we treat our roses and clematises – it has to do with the climate. The last 3 months we have only had 2 days above 25 degrees C (77F), most of the days it has been 15-20 C (59-68F) and it has rained almost every day – so much that the ground is totally saturated so last night’s thunder and ‘one months’ worth of rain in just 3 hours’ resulted in widespread flooding. Too little and too much is just as bad….but my garden loves this climate – and it has been good for me too - as I am still recovering I haven’t had to water my garden even once these last 5 weeks. Unusual for June!
I would love a few weeks of sunny weather, we will possible get a few days next week!
Oh, and as for clematis in a container – I have specifically selected those 3 clematises I have growing like that, they are small, only growing to 5.5-6 ft and all 3 were labelled suitable for containers. I am sure you can find appropriate varieties at your end too.HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-16378189296548127032016-06-23T21:02:28.578+01:002016-06-23T21:02:28.578+01:00Hello Sue, my garden has filled up quickly and eve...Hello Sue, my garden has filled up quickly and even though there are still open spaces to fill I think I will leave them to next spring – if I can manage…I still have cuttings on the go that I can use here and there. Yes, the rain has been relentless and last night’s thunder and rain was horrible – hope we don’t get a repeat of that! There are so many people flooded around here, even in walking distance from me, so hit and miss which streets that are hit so no one is safe when it’s coming up your toilet and basin and flooding your house and garden….ugh! My goodness, I feel so lucky it didn’t happen to me :-)HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-5004135796271512672016-06-23T21:02:20.325+01:002016-06-23T21:02:20.325+01:00Thank you Christina, I knew you would like my rose...Thank you Christina, I knew you would like my roses as you have many of them yourself :-) And if you can get a chance to smell 'The Generous Gardener' I think you will fall in love with it. I can’t say anything about how it will be growing it long term as I got it last February, but next year it will probably look more like the climber it is supposed to be.
At the moment all my roses look very wet and very sad as we had a storm passing during the night and early morning. A whole month worth of rain in 3 hours – I bet all that water would have been something you would have liked for your garden – I certainly didn’t need it as we have had more than enough rain the last 3 months and my garden is making squelching noises when I walk in the beds – unusual for late June! Fortunately I just missed getting flooded, only 5 minutes’ walk from here there are several streets totally flooded in sewage and rainwater – inside the houses and the gardens. Just imagine having my beautiful garden submerged in 2 feet of rain water and sewage for 12 hours. That’s what they have had. Pfew, close call!
Hope you have beautiful weather and are enjoying your garden!HELENEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16112289914239038835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6265213687739263373.post-37864430051249969242016-06-23T21:02:11.279+01:002016-06-23T21:02:11.279+01:00Takk for det, vi har hatt mye regn og rosene mine ...Takk for det, vi har hatt mye regn og rosene mine liker det, er ikke så glad i det selv men det har hjulpet meg i de siste 5 ukene for jeg har ikke behøvd å vanne i det hele tatt.
